Au début du XIXe siècle, l’Amérique latine est secouée par des révoltes visant l’émancipation de la couronne espagnole. A la tête des insurgés, Simon Bolivar est sur le point d’être arrêté par Izquierdo, un officier de l’armée espagnole. Mais Bolivar parvient à s’échapper. Izquierdo comprend alors qu’un de ses officiers, Montserrat, est un traître. Pour le faire parler, Izquierdo menace de fusiller des innocents, pris au hasard dans la rue. La pièce raconte l’affrontement tragique entre Izquierdo, serviteur fanatique de la monarchie espagnole, et Montserrat, défenseur des populations opprimées d’Amérique latine. A travers ce drame historique aux accents tragiques, Emmanuel Roblès évoque la lutte des peuples pour l’indépendance et interroge la dimension sacrificielle de la politique. Quel prix l’homme est-il prêt à payer pour la liberté ?

At the beginning of the 19th century, Latin America is shaken by revolts aimed at emancipation from the Spanish crown. At the head of the insurgents, Simon Bolivar is about to be arrested by Izquierdo, an officer in the Spanish army. But Bolivar manage to escape. Izquierdo then realise that one of his officers, Montserrat, is a traitor. To make him talk, Izquierdo threatens to shoot innocent people taken at random from the street. The play recounts the tragic confrontation between Izquierdo, fanatical servant of the Spanish monarchy, and Montserrat, defender of the oppressed peoples of Latin America. Through this historical drama with tragic overtones, Emmanuel Roblès evokes the struggle of peoples for independence and questions the sacrificial dimension of politics. What price is man prepared to pay for freedom?
