Labourd, 1609. Les magistrats Pierre de Lancre et Jean D’Espagnet sont dépêchés par le Roi Henri IV pour démêler les affaires de sorcellerie dénoncées par les bourgeois et seigneurs du territoire.
A leur arrivée, ils découvrent un village régi par des femmes de marins, libres et affranchies, étudiant les plantes et dansant au clair de lune. Pierre de Lancre, qui s’intéresse de près à la démonologie, est à la fois terrifié et fasciné par le charme de ces femmes qu’il apparente à des complices du Diable. S’ensuivent alors la traque, les procès, les condamnations…
Le spectacle, qui mêle théâtre, danse, chant, vidéo et arts du feu, s’inspire des faits historiques qui se sont déroulés au Pays basque au XVIIe siècle. Il donne corps et voix aux destins des femmes opprimées et sacrifiées au nom de la « sorcellerie ».
Labourd, 1609. Magistrates Pierre de Lancre and Jean D’Espagnet are sent by King Henry IV to investigate the witchcraft reported by the local bourgeoisie and lords.
On their arrival, they discover a village ruled by sailors’ wives – free and emancipated women – who study plants and dance in the moonlight. Pierre de Lancre, who takes a keen interest in demonology, is both terrified and fascinated by the charm of these women, whom he regards as accomplices of the Devil. What follows is a hunt, trials, and convictions…
The show, which blends theatre, dance, song, video and fire arts, is inspired by historical events that took place in the Basque Country in the 17th century. It gives voice and form to the fates of women who were oppressed and sacrificed in the name of “witchcraft”.
